What A Beginner Should Know About SERP

SERP or Search Engine Result Page is basically the webpage that you’ll see when you search any particular search using Google, Yahoo or any other search engine. All these search engines are using different yet similar ways to list down your searches. Understanding how this search engines works is vital especially for beginners who are looking into profiteering from online business.

As a beginner, you should know that there are three basic search engines results. Those that are generated by search engine, those generated by human moderators and paid listings.

Paid listings are usually used by bigger corporations or individuals who are willing to pay extra for their site ranking. You can see that paid listings are added on different parts of SERP and you could easily distinguish them.

Human moderators go through your site and ranked it better based on relevancy criteria. This is definitely something that is out of your control

The above search generated results are more costly and out of a beginners grasp. So focus more on organic search engine results. The key to get your website into the first pages of SERP is by understanding that the search engine spiders, the background program that surf the web and indexing your site or pages, is wholly responsible for your ranking. Because bottom line, that is what you should aim for.

Now, how does search engines works and how do gain your footing on SERP. There are so many articles out there but I’m going to tell you only three ways to get you started.

1. Choosing the right keyword

You can use free Google Keyword Tool for this. Bear in mind that the highest searched keywords might not be the best one for your site. Choose something that is more unique to your site yet have a good amount of searches.

2. Build your links

This is a vast subject that can’t be explained through a single post. But essentially you should know that when two relevant sites are linked together the search engine will index it better. Though, as I mentioned, the issue of linking are much more complicated than it seems. So do more research on that.

3. Having brilliant content

This is very important. Since the earliest time when search engines were created, content had been the crucial key on getting good ranking in SERP. Not only that, you must understand that visitors to web pages are looking for information. Having brilliant content will not only establish you on SERP by organic research but also repeated visitors.

We can’t ignore that SERP are a bit of a mystery. Everyone wants to be there, many seem to have a map but nobody can really guarantee you’ll get there. Unless you’re willing to pay more money for a private jet. Even then you might not end up where you want to go.

But just start walking. You’ll reach there sooner or later.

How To Effectively Use Meta Tags for SEO

What is meta tags? If you just started out in learning SEO or Search Engine Optimization you might come across the words meta tags a few time. Meta tags are the kind of information that you presented in a way web crawlers understood so as to basically describe what your webpage. In other words, you can consider meta tags are like the webpage biography.

You are presenting it to web crawlers, so you need to put into the html code of your webpage. Let just say you are trying to describe this particular webpage. Your standard meta tags should look like this. The italics are the one that you need to change or add.

<title>Meta Tag Information</title>

<META name="description" content="The best advice on using meta tags effectively for search engine optimization ">

<meta name="keywords" content="metatags, keywords, robots.txt, search engine submission, marketing, meta tags, most effective meta tags, best search engine optimization, learning SEO, web crawler">

You can see that the meta tags consist of special keywords. Remember, three aspects of effective keyword usages. The first one is the keywords should not be too long or too short unless it is the main descriptor. For instance, the keyword ‘Japan’ would still be same as ‘In Japan’. Just as ‘Tourist spot Japan’ is much better than ‘Where tourist would go in Japan’.

The second aspect is you need to use a keyword that is defines by actual searches. You could use many keyword tools for this but the most common one is Google Keyword. The keyword that is over a thousand searches is always a good thing. But you can always niche your webpage by adding keywords with smaller searches as long as it is not below a hundred per month.

The third aspect is you have to make sure not to repeat the keywords over and over again. Take note of my example above and you can see I’ve repeated the keyword meta tags only twice even though this web page is mainly about meta tags.

Some other things that you need to consider is improving your meta tags by adding special tags inside your html coding apart from the standard one that you already have.

These will help the web crawler to find your webpage base on category. You can add any of them based on your own page.

Categorize by the author of the page

<meta name="author" content="mywebpage@.com">

Categorize by the copyright date

<meta name="copyright" content="mywebpage,Oct 2011">

Categorize by the time last updated

<meta name="last_updated" content="24-10-2011">

Though some might say the uses of meta tags for SEO are dead, it is really still essential. Without it, the web crawler would find it harder to rank or register amongst the thousands of webpages added daily.

Simplifying the Complexity of Google PageRank

What is Page Rank? The first impression is kind of obvious. It is about page ranking. Well, it is true and yet the same not really accurate.

Page Rank is actually an algorithm that was developed by Larry Page, co founder of Google Inc and Page Rank is named after him. The algorithm is the core of link analysis for Google search engine and is essential to all SEO practitioners.

It was developed in 1998 together with the prototype Google search engine. The algorithm are cited as PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + … + PR(tn)/C(tn)) which was the version when it was first published. It was said that Google actually uses different variations nowadays but nobody in Google had clarified it.

It is a complex equation for beginner but basically it is how a page being rank in SERP (Search Engine Ranking Page) by incorporating the inbound and outbound link to a webpage. Though if you intend to delve deeper into it, you’ll find PR is a vast subject. But let us just look into the two components and see how you could use them to increase your webpage ranking.

We use Page A; as your page, Page B and C; as others pages

Inbound Links

These are links that are being put in Page B and C that point to your page or Page A.  Fundamentally, it means the more links pointing to your webpage, the better is your ranking. It would be much better if the webpage that has your links are good ranking site. However, the Google indexing system has evolved in putting importance of content over linking. This means even if you have built so much links, it would be pretty useless if your page had no content at all.

Outbound links

These are links are being put in Page A pointing to Page B or Page C. Now, when you build your webpage it looks awesome to have all these links. But bear in mind if you don’t have enough return or inbound links from Page B and C, you will increase their ranking and not yours. This is because Page B and C are ‘leeching’ the ranking from your web page. Though, I’m not saying outbound links are not good. It increases the relevancy of your page and then made it easier to crawl and rank. On the other hand makes sure you have inbound links more than outbound.

How to build link is another topic that is worth looking into after understanding PR. At the same time too, you might want to delve into PR algorithm and find the best way to improve your ranking.

What Makes Steve Jobs, a Steve Jobs?

Steve Jobs, the founder and CEO of Apple Inc. has left us at about 3pm on the 5th October 2011, a day after the launching of iPhone 4GS. His death shook the world. An iconic figure for Apple, many people respects him because of his success-driven attitude and his endless pursuit for perfection and passion. He died because of respiratory arrest from a pancreatic tumor at his house in Palo Alto.

What Makes Steve Jobs, a Steve Jobs?

Steve Jobs is a real talent and no one can deny his influence in revolutionizing the way how people interact with a computer and electronic device. His work in Apple is really remarkable and he is known as a man that has great qualities which separates him from even the most successful CEOs in the world. Even though he is not directly involved in the production line of Apple, he is the one that gives his vision and unique sight on what the people need.

The first thing that makes Steve Jobs as himself is his great aesthetic quality. He always strived for excellence in all the Apple products and builds something that can be received well by the people around the world. For Steve Jobs, the exterior is not the only thing that needs beautification, even the chips, boards and processors inside the digital device must also look well. His perfect design sense is what creates great products like iPhones, iMac, and Macbook Pro. His main rule of thumb is that art and technology must never be separated, as both of them complement each other and makes it a whole.

His sense of perfection is also what makes Steve Jobs a successful man. He will never settle even though he already has a billion-dollar company, and as long as his body permits, he will do all he can to do his best as a CEO for Apple. He will not release a product if it cannot get the top spot in the market, and this can be seen by his judgement to cancel production of Apple PDA at the last minute. He also restarted iPhone development from scratch because he is not satisfied with the outcome.

Another Steve Jobs trait that moulds Apple is his arrogance. He is well aware of his genius mind and great sense and he does not have the modesty to hide them. This is what makes Apple employees believe that their products are the best in the world and they know it. Because of his arrogance, he is not well received by his company’s competitors like Microsoft. He once claimed Microsoft steals his work during a speech at Stanford University in 2005.

Steve Jobs is an enigma that can never be fully understand, now that he has perished from the world. However, his legacy and vision will always be visible at Apple and it is up to the company to continue the great work that Steve Jobs started.

3 Things You May Not Know About Steve Jobs

During his bachelor days, Steve Jobs was a real workaholic and live life with his job. He is the kind of people who would love to spend his days at the office rather than living freely at his home. Because of his nature, he does not have time to prepare meals for himself and before marrying Laurene, his meals will be prepared by a young couple who is also his schoolmate during the days in Berkeley.

Steve Jobs was a militant vegan and he has a weird reason for adopting this diet. During his time in Reed College, he took this diet because this diet would allow him to excrete all mucus and therefore the need to shower. Aside from being a vegan, Steve Jobs also fast because he believed that digestion will take a lot of his energy that can be utilised to do his work. The result from the fast is that he can stay up for several nights in a row. There was also a time where he only eats fruits every day.

For a man with huge amount of wealth, it is normal for Steve Jobs to have a great taste for cars. He always loved German cars like Porsche and Mercedes but he also has a strange habit if he drives a car to the office. If you are searching for Steve Jobs’ car, you can find it at a parking bay specialised for the handicapped and his car will always be the one which has no license plate.

There are a lot other characteristics of Steve Jobs that is considered weird but unique to others. His sense of perfection, aesthetic quality and his arrogance is what brings Apple to its height. He also has a strong will and a never-give-up attitude even though he was thrown out from his own company in the year 1985 (but later come back with new vision and philosophy). Geniuses will always be different from others and that was who Steve Jobs was.

How does Latent Semantic Indexing affect SEO?

There is a longer definition of Latent Semantic Indexing or LSI in Wikipedia somewhere but I’m only going to touch on basically what it is and how does it affects search engine optimization or SEO. In plain words, LSI is a retrieving and indexing method that works on unstructured similar words and interpreting it as the same.

This is the same as playing with Thesaurus or in other words, synonyms. Let’s just say you are writing about rocks. Later you feel that stones are better words. Replacing the word rocks with stones doesn’t change the interpretation much as it brings essentially the same meaning. However, this does help you from over using your keywords and creating a state called keyword stuffing that would deteriorate your website more.

So, imagine your keyword is ‘Men’s best fashion 2011‘. If you’re considering the indexing, that would allow the phrase ‘what fashionable guys wears in 2011‘ to be interpreted as the same. The article would even sound much better with the second phrase.

Now should you really go and bust your bank to get the best product that can spin out something by using LSI?  So you can get on the number one page of famous search engines? What is my humble advice? A definite big no. In reality, a free thesaurus in your Word programs added with some common sense would do just fine.

A growing numbers of webmasters and online marketers are moving away from so called LSI as once again this acronym are being overused. In fact, what Google had been using is known as semantic analysis and if you want to use that as part of your SEO techniques then do some research on that.

Do understand that Google had never admits to having LSI as part of its search engine. LSI is much similar to artificial intelligence technology and many feels that Google hasn’t reach that stage yet. What they did admit was incorporating semantic analysis into the search engine.

Therefore, in conclusion, don’t focus on LSI in your SEO methods.  Google or any other search engine had never used them anyway. Don’t get into the LSI bandwagon and start buying stuff on LSI. But you can base on the core of LSI to create better content for your site. Combined it with your regular keywords and other effective SEO methods and you would find some improvement on your site ranking. You can do more research on semantic analysis if you think it is necessary but do start with what you have in hand first.
